As we approach the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon's discovery of Florida, St Augustine continues it's years of celebration with music, festivals, and reenactments. The old city has something planed each year, for the next 3 years to celebrate our county, our state, ultimately leading up to the 450th anniversary of our city's founding in 1565.
This year, 2012, was the celebration of Spain's Constitution, and the last standing monument to that constitution in our Plaza, de Constitution.
Next year, 2013, will be the celebration of Juan Ponce's discovery, and claiming of, the land known as Floridia (the place of flowers - it must have been spring when he found us) for the king of Spain, Ferdinand.
But Juan did more than sail the Atlantic, before that he was a military man after being born into a prominent family. He also sailed with Christopher Columbus, on his second voyage to the Caribbean, became Governor of Puerto Rico and several other islands in the area.
There is so much more to learn of this early pioneer, and his contemporaries, of the New World. Staying at a bed and breakfast like the Inn on Charlotte, the city's premiere romantic B&B in beautiful downtown St Augustine Florida, is the best way for the two of you to explore the ancient city for yourself. Who knows, you may re-discover each other.
